BDI1

The Big Day In is an ICT careers conference run by the Australian Computer Society Foundation (ACS), in association with Digital Careers.  It is designed for both high school (Years 9-12) and University students interested in careers in technology.

This week was the first of a series of Big Day In events around Australia and Adobe is a major sponsor. About 1,500 students attended over two days at UTS (University of Technology Sydney).

BDI2It was great to have the opportunity to share with these young people the importance of developing ICT, media & creativity skills so that they can brand themselves and stand out form the crowd in their studies and in their future work prospects.

BDI3

One of the UNSW Adobe reps, Priyanka Chitnis, shared the stage with me to give her story to the young people in the room. She has just about completed her degree and has been developing design, ICT & multimedia skills in a wide range of areas in the hope of starting her own business. She did a great job and was a inspiration to all the students, especially the girls in the audience.

BDI4

The Adobe stand was looked after by Heidie Fisher from IC Central, Adobe’s certification partner. There was a lot of interests from school students, university students and teachers about Adobe Certification, how to best learn Adobe products and the Adobe Education Exchange.

Here are some more images of the Sydney event …

Next week, the Big Day In moves to Wagga Wagga.

It was great to be involved with the 2015  Grimwade House Year 5 ICT Seminar last week. Each Year 5 student at Grimwade (Melbourne Grammar’s Co-educational Junior School) has their own laptop with the Adobe Creative Cloud installed.

Each Year 5 student rotated through a range of ICT & cyber safety related workshops and presentations coordinated by Mr Matt Smith, Grimwade’s eLearning Coordinator.

The Adobe products & topics included video production with Adobe Premier Pro, web design with Adobe Muse and desktop publishing with Adobe InDesign.

Here are some comments about the event by Mr Matt Smith.

I cannot thank you all enough for your contributions to the MGS Grimwade House – Year 5 ICT Conference. The students were thoroughly engaged and excited with your workshops and many have come back to the new school week with their own websites, games, movies, posters, FakeBook accounts and an awareness of what it means to be a respectful and responsible digital citizen.

Adobe in Western Australian Classrooms Events

Check out Tim’s Website                                          Check out CreateEDU TV

Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth was the venue for three Adobe in WA Classrooms Events on February 18 & 19.

WA

The aim of these events, which were held at both the ECU Mt Lawley & Joondalup campuses, was to raise awareness of the importance of creativity in education and how Adobe creativity software is making a difference to education globally and provide WA teachers with ideas and inspiration for their classrooms.

WA2

During each session, I shared some of Adobe’s recent research into the significance of creativity in education and industry. My slides can be found on the Adobe Education Exchange via: http://bit.ly/adobe-wa15/

WA3

One of the highlights of each session was when Richard Turner-Jones (Adobe Solution Consultant) shared a number of new Adobe Touch Apps that are freely available on the App Store for IOS devices like iPhones & iPads.

WA4

Darren Smith (Adobe Education Leader from Atwell College in Perth) did a great job sharing the recent journey that his school has gone through to enhance the use of ICT in the classroom and how Adobe has played a part in their progress. It was great for the Perth educators, many of whom were ICT advocates at their schools, to hear the Atwell College story of success and how ICT is making a difference to teaching and learning.

Following Darren’s session, the participants broke into smaller workshop groups based on the following topics:

  • Digital Portfolios made easy with Adobe Acrobat
  • Build eLearning content with Adobe Captivate
  • Flipping the classroom with Adobe Voice & Adobe Presenter
  • Webdesign without coding using Adobe Muse & Edge Animate

WA5

Cari Jansen,  Adobe Certified Instructor, was a great asset to have on board for the Acrobat workshops. Cari is professional Adobe trainer based in Perth. She is an expert in Adobe Acrobat Pro, Captivate, DPS, Edge Animate, InDesign, Illustrator, Muse and Photoshop. If you would like her services, she can be contacted via cj@carijansen.com

WA6

It was also great to have Petra Trinke (Adobe Education Leader from Belridge Secondary College) running the flipped learning workshops. Both Darren, Petra and Cari very generously gave up their time to be involved in these events and it was very much appreciated by all involved.

WA7

Gareth Cowan from IC Central involved to share how Adobe Certification can be gained by students and teachers.

I would also like to thank Dr Jenny Lane from Edith Cowan University for booking the rooms and supporting these events.

The feedback highlights included:

  • Learning about the new apps that are available.
  • Learning about using Adobe Acrobat to create portfolios
  • Seeing some of the apps demonstrated. The possibilities were incredible and its great to see how they are all linked.
  • Hearing real life use of Adobe programs
  • Learning Applications, such as Adobe muse and Edge animate. It was extremely beneficial having the time to experiment with the applications and ask questions face to face.
  • Being shown the apps by Richard – Very useful and a snapshot of each of them. I was online and trying each of them as they were being shown
  • The practical workshop was very interesting.

Ashdale College

Ashdale1

On Tuesday February 17, I visited Ashdale Secondary College in Perth, Western Australia, to run a day workshop on Adobe Muse & Edge Animate with a group of Year 9 students.

Ashdale

Ashdale Secondary College is located in Darch, in the northern suburbs of Perth. It was built about seven years ago and prides itself on being a technology rich school. Occurring it its website, it is a distinctive, world class, educational community of excellence where all students are motivated to strive to achieve their best and to realise their potential in a values-rich environment.

http://www.ashdalesc.wa.edu.au

Ashdale3

I was invited by Shaloni Naik who is one of the WA Adobe Education Leaders.

Muse is Adobe’s new web design tool that enables the creation of website without the need to understand HTML or CSS coding. It’s not a replacement for the traditional Dreamweaver, it is more of a web design tool for designers where Dreamweaver is a tool for Web developers.

Muse1

Edge Animate is a 2D animation tool that produces a HTML solution, as opposed to the more traditional Adobe Flash which requires a plug in to be viewed and is not compatible with iPads and iPhones. With Edge Animate, you can build animation sequences that will play on all devices.

Animate1

Both of these products became available with when the Adobe Creative Cloud was launched in June 2013.

The Ashdale students produced some outstanding work. I’m always inspired by what young people can achieve when given the tools and the opportunity to be creative.

It was great spending time with a number of Creative Academics from all over Australia and New Zealand at the 2015 CreateWorld Conference at Griffith University, Brisbane.

Cwbanner

As is says in their website (http://auc.edu.au/createworld) …

CreateWorld is a 2 day performance, presentation, and professional development event, specifically for academic and technical staff who work in the digital arts disciplines.

The conference features a wide range of academic and technical presenters from the tertiary education and industry sectors, and includes several keynotes, panel sessions, hypotheticals, hands-on technical workshops, and regular presentation sessions.

I have had the pleasure of keynoting at the last two of these events along with Richard Tuner-Jones (Adobe Solutions Consultant).

IMG_9858.JPGThe topic of my presentation this year was Creative Candidates, What Industry is Looking For. One of the stats I shared was form Adobe’s recent study into preparing future job candidates indicating that 82% of hiring managers in the US either agree or strongly agree that students have a better chance of being employed if they are able to communicate through digital and visual media. My slides are available on the Education Exchange via http://bit.ly/adobe-createworld15.

IMG_9862.JPG

I had the pleasure to introduce these lecturers to the 2015 Adobe Design Achievement Awards that were lunched the same week as the conference.

IMG_9887.JPGRichard Turner-Jones did a great job sharing some of the Adobe Touch apps and how they link with the more established Adobe Creative Cloud software.

IMG_9888.JPG

It was also my privilege to promote the great free resource for teachers that is the Adobe Education Exchange which is just about to tick over to 190,000 members.

russ1One of the highlights for me personally was meeting Brisbane based journalist/photographer Russell Brown who has written a book about Adobe Photoshop called Paths to Artistic Imaging in Photoshop which is available to order via here.

Adobe Day at Swinburne

Check out Tim’s new look Website                                Check out CreateEDU TV

swinburne_logoOn Tuesday 27th January, Brian Chau, Matt Davis (two of Adobe’s finest Solution Consultants) and myself ran a day of Adobe training activities/presentations for a number of lecturing staff at Swinburne University’s School of Design in Melbourne. IMG_9820I began the day presenting the learning theory of Connectivism as published by Dr George Siemens from Canada and relating this to Adobe’s 2014 research on employability.

see my post from May 7, 2014

Seeking creative Candidates research

Matt Davis ran some repeated sessions on digital publishing with InDesign in the morning and some afternoon session on linking Adobe Mix & Adobe Color with Photoshop.

IMG_9806

IMG_9804Brian Chau, ran morning sessions on Adobe Captivate and then spent the afternoon showing how the new IOS apps Adobe Shape & Adobe Brush link well with Adobe Illustrator.

IMG_9802

IMG_9815The workshops that I ran featured video solutions based around Adobe Presenter, Adobe Clip and Premier Pro CC.

It was great getting such positive feedback from the Swinburne staff such as …

‘I was  with the pace: I’ve been at classes where its either way too fast and i get sulky, or its way too slow and i start daydreaming.  The presenters moved along at quite a fast – but not too fast – pace.  they re-iterated what was important, with the understanding that it was new territory and certain things need re-iterating.’

‘Got to see overview of  quite a few different things,  – ie wasn’t too focused on individual apps’

‘Mobile applications and film making was excellent and a great value to education.’

‘Captivate and Presenter will be immediately useful for me. Video demonstrations were spectacular and inspirational.’

The big take away for everyone was to get involved with the Adobe Education Exchange and contribute to this amazing global network of innovative and creative educators.
